Magnolia Community Initiative (MCI) is a network of 70+ organizations focusing on a 500-block area in Los Angeles as an incubator for new ideas and innovative approaches. MCI rethinks how local resources, partner organizations and residents can work together to strengthen families. We focus on empowering residents to advocate and bring to light the issues and concerns of the community as a whole.
MCI is a network of 70+ organizations focusing on a 500-block area in Los Angeles as an incubator for new ideas and innovative approaches. MCI rethinks how local resources, partner organizations and residents can work together to strengthen families. We focus on empowering residents to advocate and bring to light the issues and concerns of the community as a whole. The MCI catchment area is a 500 square block area near downtown Los Angeles, CA which consists of about a dozen neighborhoods that are home to over 101,000 residents including 25,000 vulnerable children and youth (zip codes 90006, 90007, 90011, and 90015).
MCI targets the well-being of these children, of whom 32% live below the poverty threshold, 35% are obese, 40% enter kindergarten unprepared, 70% have less than basic reading proficiency in third grade, and 50% will fail to graduate from high school. Almost 90% of the population identify as people of color. Magnolia is also home to a large immigrant population. Half of the population are immigrants, and 71% of the immigrant population does not have citizenship status (this could include both those with green cards or visas and those who are undocumented). Within the population, approximately 69% are Hispanic, 15% Asian, 9% White, and 7% African American.
